Maryam Shafipour transferred to hospital and back to prison in handcuffs

Daneshjoonews – Student activist Maryam Shafipour, jailed in Evin prison since July 27th 2013, has been transferred in handcuffs to a medical facility outside prison without the knowledge of her family. A sonogram was conducted on her in the hospital and she was returned behind bars without the results being revealed. This is not the first time Shafipour has been taken to the hospital without her family being notified.

After several transfers to the hospital and back during the past weeks, physicians have determined that Maryam Shafipour had been misdiagnosed in the prison infirmary and prescribed wrong medications.

According to IranGreenVoice, a source close to the family said during her last visitation Maryam Shafipour looked very pale and had lost a lot of weight. She has been taken to the prison infirmary with severe stomach pains and nausea but her condition has not changed. Different doctors at Evin infirmary attempted to make a diagnosis and prescribed various medications, all of them ineffective. The ailing activist has made several requests for a gastroscopy to determine her illness, but has been denied by prison doctors and officials.

Shafipour also suffers from swelling and inflammation of the lymph nodes. According to physicians outside of prison, because she was misdiagnosed and a sonogram was not conducted, Shafipour was prescribed the wrong medications for 3 months. When her illness clearly did not subside, last week she was transferred to a hospital outside prison in handcuffs without the knowledge of her family. She was transferred back to prison in handcuffs after a sonogram was performed without being told of the results. Shafipour is now back behind bars with no diagnosis for the pain she is suffering.

In the past Maryam Shafipour has passed out while behind bars. She also suffers from heart problems, skin issues, gastrointestinal pain, severe toothache and recently throbbing in her lymph nodes. Per reports, there are several other female political prisoners who suffer various illnesses behind bars.

Amnesty International has demanded that Maryam Shafipour immediately and unconditionally be released in order to receive urgent medical care.

Maryam Shafipour is a former agricultural engineering student from Qazvin International University who was suspended after 2 semesters and was expelled from university on her eighth semester due to her student activities and her weblog. [In 2009 she served in the presidential election campaign of Mehdi Karroubi who has been under house arrest.] Shafipour was first detained in 2010 and was handed a one-year suspended prison term lasting 5 years by the Qazvin Revolutionary Court.

Following her July 2013 detainment, Shafipour was handed a 7-year prison sentence by Judge Salavati. She remains behind bars while her filed appeal has been sent to Branch 54 of the Revolutionary Appellate Court presided by Judge Pour Arab.
