Prison Guards Prohibit Mourning Ceremony for Father of Political Prisoner

Prison guards prohibited a mourning ceremony to take place in ward 2 of Gohardasht prison [Rajai Shahr] for the father of political prisoner Karimpour Samadi who passed away a week ago. The ceremony was being planned by political prisoners.

Approximately four months ago, Intelligence agents contacted Karimpour Samadi’s father by phone and told him, “We will execute your son this morning.” This caused his father to have a brain aneurysm and develop a blood clot in his brain, which led to his death. The killers who caused the sudden death of Karmipour Samadi’s father are the Intelligence agents along with the entire brutal clerical regime.

Karimpour Samadi is held in prison despite the lack of evidence against him in his file and a bail of $50 thousand [USD] set. He is now under increased physical and psychological pressures due to the failed efforts to get permission to attend his father’s funeral.

We plead with all human rights agencies inside and outside the country to make every effort on behalf of political prisoners in Iran. All the citizens in Iran and the world need to know this ruling regime is a complete dictatorship and has the blood of the people on its hands. This government does not respect or adhere to any human rights laws.

Human Rights and Democracy Activists in Iran

Student activist Hossein Parhizgar arrested

Daneshjoonews –  A few days ago Hossein Parhizgar, a student activist was arrested after being summoned to the intelligence office of the town of Babol.

According to Danshjoonews, security agents in the province of Mazandaran have intensified pressures on civil and student activists. Hossein Parhizgar, a liberal student who had been suspended from school, was recently arrested due to the approach of 13 Aban November 4th). The suspended student had taken part in post-election activities and was threatened and interrogated on several occasions after being summoned to the Intelligence offices. He was assaulted by Intelligence agents and subjected to threats and beatings so severe that after leaving their offices, he had to be taken to the hospital.

Parhizgar was a staff member of Mehdi Karroubi’s campaign in the Mazandaran province during the 10th Presidential election. He was incarcerated after the election and was held in solitary confinement for 12 days. He was threatened and subjected to severe beatings and torture by the town of Babol guards.

With the arrival of 13 Aban (November 4th), pressures on students in the universities have intensified. An unknown number of student activists at Amirkabir University have also been summoned to the Revolutionary Court.

It is evident that as 16 Azar (Dec 7th, Students Day), is approaching, security forces are making every effort to put a stop to any possibility of protests by students in commemoration of their day.

Jailed Nasrin Sotoudeh Back on Hunger Strike

Radio Farda –  Reza Khandan has confirmed that his wife jailed human rights lawyer Nasrin Sotoudeh is back on hunger strike.  She began the hunger strike on Sunday to protest the mishandling of her case file.

In an interview with Radio Farda, Khandan said that Sotoudeh is on a dry hunger strike. He stated that during their last meeting his wife was “extremely weak, her face had turned black and the children cried the whole time.”

Nasrin Sotoudeh had previously gone on hunger strike on September 25th and stopped around October 26th. According to her husband, the human rights lawyer had threatened that she would go on hunger strike again if her prison conditions did not change. Khandan said, “Mrs. Sotoudeh is protesting her incarceration along with the mishandling of her case file. She had said in the past that she would break her first hunger strike only on the condition that the promises made to her were kept, but it is now clear that nothing has changed.”

This is happening even though there was news that on Sunday, Tehran’s Attorney General visited the prison and had a meeting with Sotoudeh. Khandan said that Sotoudeh had already begun her hunger strike that day and, since her meeting with Tehran’s Attorney General did not change her mind about anything, she has re-commenced her hunger strike.

Nasrin Sotoudeh is charged with acting against national security, congregation and collusion with intent to disrupt national security,  and cooperation with the Center for Human Rights Defenders. She is incarcerated since September 3, 2010.

The lawyer’s immediate release has been requested by many human rights agencies including Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch and Reporters Without Borders.

Political and human rights activists have also protested against her arrest and demanded her release, including Vaclav Havel (former president of the Czech Republic), Shirin Ebadi (human rights lawyer), and Zahra Rahnavard (wife of Mir Hossein Mousavi).

Pressures Increase for Students Before 13 Aban

Daneshjoonews –   With the arrival of 13 Aban (November 4th), many Amirkabir University students have been summoned to the Revolutionary Court.

According to Daneshjoo News, an unknown number of pro-Mousavi activists at Amirkabir University have been summoned to the Revolutionary Court on the commemoration day of the capture of the American embassy by leftists and students following the Imam.

The summoned university students are all either staff members or activists who supported Mousavi in the 2009 Iranian Presidential election. They have all worked for the “Savida” publication at Amirkabir University.

These students were previously summoned and interrogated during the past year.

It seems like the purpose of the summons is to inflict apprehension and fear on the students before 13 Aban and 16 Azar (December 7th). Judging by the previous behavior of the security forces, it is expected that with 16 Azar approaching, the pressures will get more intense.
